Germany abounds with opportunities for Zimbabwean products

Germany is the largest economy in the EU with an average GDP per Capita of US$43,686. It is a huge consumer of iron and steel, plastic products, gold, coffee, aluminum, organic fruits and vegetables as well as honey, among other products. The German commercial sector is dominated by several wholesalers and retailers which can be used by Zimbabwean suppliers of FMCGs to penetrate Europe’s largest economy.

Data from Trade Map shows that Zimbabwe is a net exporter to Germany with a cumulative trade surplus of US$100.9 million recorded from 2013 to 2017. Zimbabwe’s export basket to Germany comprises largely unprocessed tobacco, vermiculite, tea and coffee, cane sugar, raw hides and skins among others. Opportunities exist for local companies to increase exports to Germany through value addition and mineral beneficiation.
